Last weekend (Jan 21st) I did a survey of Tropical Fish prices at the various locations in Calgary, as well as some of the local online vendors.
I made a “Shopping List” of 17 fish that I have purchased in the past or might purchase at some point, then I went around and checked which locations had the fish and how much they were. For Petland and PetSmart, I went to the 130th St SE location. I listed two prices for Petland, the first is the regular non-PetClub price, the second is the PetClub membership price if you buy three or more of the listed fish.

One thing that really stood out is how different the selection is at each location. Also, price isn’t the only factor to look at when buying fish, there is often a significant difference in size for the same species of fish from the various locations. If you have the time, it is definitely worth going to as many locations as you can before purchasing.

This wasn’t meant to be an ongoing comprehensive price comparison. It was meant more to illustrate how prices and stock can vary and that no one location has the best price for all fish. For example, even while I was at Fin Gallery, they were in the process of dropping the prices on several of the fish. I went with what was written on the tank when I looked at it. There is a good chance that the price could be different the following day.
Also, stock always changes, just because a location didn’t have a particular fish the day I was there, doesn’t mean they never have it. I know Pisces carries Cardinal Tetras and I’ve purchased Guppies from Francos in the past, but they didn’t have those fish the day I went.
